Phonics

Phonics at Shackleton

At Shackleton, we use a phonics programme called Little Wandle Letters and Sounds.

This is a complete phonics programme which draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.

The short, daily lessons focus on what needs to be learned

Correct pronunciation of these sounds and effective blending skills are key to success in learning the sound system to aid reading. There are videos on the parent’s page to show how this is taught in school.

In these sessions children will blend sounds to read words and learn ‘tricky’ words which do not follow the usual pattern of the sound system, they will also apply these by reading and writing.

All children, who receive phonics teaching, will have a reading book to take home that is closely matched to their current phonic knowledge.

If you would like to find out more about the programme, please access the following website:

You can also log in to the Collins Hub where your child can access the online books
