Year 5

nimrod quest

Our work this term is focused upon 'Out of Africa'.  Our work this term is focused upon the amazing continent of Africa. We will be learning about Nelson Mandela: his life and great influence on the lives of so many. Alongside this we will learn about the rich variety of culture and wildlife across this vast continent.

These are some of the things we will be learning during the Autumn term

Mathematics

In our maths lessons Children will learn to write addition, subtraction, multiplication and division Maths Stories, including negative numbers, fractions and mixed numbers, e.g. 2 4/5 + 1 3/5 = 4 2/5. They will use vertical additions and subtractions to calculate answers. They will use the grid method to complete multiplication of 2-digit numbers. They will also solve word problems involving division (including answers with remainders). They will learn to write remainders as a number and as a fraction, e.g. 43 ÷ 5 = 8 r 3 or 8 3/5.

In geometry, data and measures the children will learn different aspects depending on the maths group that they are in.

Please feel free to come and talk to your child’s maths teacher if you require more details.

P.E.

In Physical Education over the term we will complete a number of units of study. Both classes have their P.E lessons on Monday and Friday. We will start the term working on Multi-skills. This will involve a range of activities to develop the children’s agility, stamina, co-ordination and balance. These skills are essential in all sports. Later in the term we will be using these skills to play Tag Rugby. These lessons will be outside. Please ensure that you child has suitable P.E kit for this e.g. tracksuit top and bottoms.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD INTO SCHOOL WITH THEIR PE KIT ON MONDAY AND FRIDAY.

English

The focus for the first few weeks in Literacy will be writing diary entries. The children will be putting themselves into the shoes of different characters who appear in the books that we will be reading in class. We will also look at autobiographies and biographies.
